OUR MISSION
The ‘Protecting the Right Ventricle network (PRORVnet)’ is dedicated to conducting high quality research aimed at studying strategies that could potentially mitigate right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in critical illness (eg acute respiratory distress syndrome), during extracorporeal support, cardiac surgery (including heart transplantation), thoracic surgery (including lung transplantation and one-lung ventilation) and sepsis. PRORVnet will also help to build on a scientific foundation for the use of transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography in predicting RV dysfunction and investigation of novel echocardiographic markers of RV dysfunction.
Justification
Right ventricular dysfunction is an independent predictor of mortality in critical illness and cardiothoracic surgery. Right ventricular protective strategies (mechanical, pharmacological) could theoretically mitigate RV dysfunction and improve outcomes. High quality research is therefore needed in order to characterise RV injury and the natural history of RV dysfunction in different settings.

PRORVnet is committed to synergies and cross-fertilisation between scholars and researchers of the RV leading to collaborative work and a network of centres to facilitate large studies.
